How to Get to Grand-Popo from Cotonou, Lome and Europe

From Cotonou
Cotonou International Airport (COO) is the main entry point for international travellers. From there, Grand-Popo is about 90 kilometres west, roughly 2.5 hours by road under normal conditions. The RN1 national road, connecting Cotonou to the Togolese border, is generally in good condition.
By private taxi
The most comfortable and recommended option for new arrivals. The taxi picks you up directly outside the airport or at your Cotonou hotel.

Crossing the Hilacondji border
Hilacondji is one of West Africa's busiest border posts. The procedure is straightforward:
- Present your passport at the Togolese exit post
- Cross the no-man's-land (a few hundred metres on foot)
- Present your passport at the Beninese entry post
- An entry visa is issued on arrival for most nationalities
ECOWAS nationals are exempt from visas. Allow 30 to 60 minutes for formalities.

Road tips
- Best time to drive: between 6am and 10am. Heat and traffic intensify after midday.
- Road conditions: the RN1 is paved and in good condition. The Route des Peches is a laterite track that can be difficult in the rainy season.
